IRAN's Digital Economy Outlook

Mohsen Mahdian, a member of the Digital Economy Commission of Nasr Organization in Tehran, believes that by focusing on the existing capacities in the country, the future of Iran’s digital economy will be promising.

According to the Public Relations Department of the Tehran Computer Guild Organization, we had a conversation with Mohsen Mahdian, a member of the Digital Economy Commission of Nasr Organization in Tehran, about the challenges and capacities of this field.Mahdian talks about the status of the digital economy in Iran, saying, “The digital economy is a field that is growing and developing worldwide. Due to the increasing need for this field, attention to the digital economy has increased, and it has attracted significant investments. However, in Iran, this field has been neglected. The digital economy is still considered new in our country, and more efforts are needed for its development. Currently, compared to the global average, the share of the digital economy in the total gross national product is much lower. This statistic demonstrates the need for more attention to this field.”

Mahdian continues to discuss the challenges ahead for this field in Iran, stating, “To develop the digital economy, attention must be paid to its required infrastructure. Currently, we face challenges in the infrastructure of this field, and planning should be done to improve it. Another challenge is the level of investment in this sector. Due to the existing risks in this field, large companies are not interested in investing in it, and the volume of investment has significantly decreased compared to previous years.”

He adds, “In recent years, with the intensification of economic sanctions, accessing and collaborating with cutting-edge global companies and developing hardware and software sectors has become difficult. Alongside this challenge, digital economy laws and regulations have not been updated and changed with the development and growth of this field. Access to skilled and trained human resources is also among the other challenges of this field. Many young talents tend to migrate after a short period. This crisis is worrisome and may have negative consequences for the country’s economy.”

Mahdian believes that despite the existing challenges in Iran’s digital economy, if we focus on the capacities of this field, we can be hopeful about the future. He states, “Considering the untapped sectors of Iran’s economy and the existing needs, there are numerous capacities in the field of the digital economy that have unfortunately been overlooked. One sector that should be considered is the connection between the digital field and traditional industries. Given the needs of these industries to improve their production and service sectors, innovative digital technologies can be a catalyst. A significant portion of the development of the digital economy in other countries has also been achieved through this approach. By paying attention to this sector and utilizing young human resources, we can be hopeful about the future of the digital economy in Iran. However, to achieve this goal, it is necessary for the government and private sectors to enhance their interaction with research and educational centers so that, as a result of this collaboration, conditions for the development and growth of this field are provided.”
